We Repair Laptop Palmrest Problems

What Is A Palmrest: On many modern “unibody” laptops the entire machine is built upon the palmrest. This would be the frame and or outer case including the keyboard. When a keyboard goes bad, or the hinges break loose the palmrest needs to be replaced. The keyboard is actually part of the palmrest assembly along with the touchpad and mouse buttons. One multi-part assembly that the screen attaches to. Laptop Palmrest Repair is one of the most common services we perform.

Laptop Hinge Repair Is A Palmrest Repair: In many cases when a customer checks in a laptop for a “hinge repair” the problem is not actually the hinge. The place where their screen attaches to the laptop / palmrest is what is damaged. A laptop’s screen attaches to most laptops with 2, 3, or 4 screws going through the bottom of the hinge into the palmrest assembly. The brass collets that the screws thread into break loose from the plastic mounts in the laptop’s palmrest. In most cases the entire palmrest needs to be repaired to properly mount the screen.

Palmrest Repair Requires Complete Disassembly: On the unibody models of laptops replacing the palmrest means removing all of the parts from the bad palmrest. Then installing them onto the new part. This includes removing the motherboard, and the screen. Then all cables, ribbons, and other parts need to be re-attached when the parts are installed into the new palmrest assembly. This can be quite a bit of work with many models. Complete dis-assembly and re-assembly. We recommend a qualified laptop repair technician performs this service. Actually it takes skill to unplug all the cables, and ribbons and transfer parts from one palmrest to a new one.
